The “great test” of convergence and efficiency

Hadiseh Rabiee, the director of GPTT Political and Parliamentary Studies evaluated the initial performance of the new term of the Iranian Parliament in a note published on June 1.

According to her, this short period shows new patterns in the power play and the interactions of the country’s political camps on the floor of the Parliament. One of the noteworthy points was the decisive role of independent representatives of the parliament in the election of the spokesperson and the presiding committee of the parliament. This group, which is, apparently, not close to the main political camps, with its crucial vote for Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, prevented the candidates of other currents from taking the office of the spokesperson. Under the title of independents, new and fresh representatives in the parliament can play a decisive role in power equations in the parliament and the legislative process during their four-year term of representation.

She stressed that the twelfth Parliament, within the next few months, is facing the crucial and very important task of the vote of confidence to the new government’s cabinet. It not only determines the direction of the future government’s performance but can have a direct impact on the interaction between the 12th Parliament and the 14th administration, as well as the degree of convergence or divergence of political currents in the country. So, the Parliament’s performance in the review and vote of confidence to the ministers will be a benchmark for evaluating the efficiency and performance of the representatives and the positive and negative interactions between the different branches of the Iranian government.
