foreign policy in presidential election Ali Salehian and Mojtaba Hosseini Fahraji, GPTT senior researchers published a note in Agah newspaper on June 9, in which they examined discussing foreign policy issues in presidential election debates. According to them, the examination of the presidential candidates’ statements about their ideas on how to run the country, indicates that “foreign policy” and especially the issue of “sanctions” have been the most repeated points of concern. In fact, except for one or two cases, the rest of the registered candidates have mentioned this issue in a few-minute interviews following the registration. “Solving the issue of sanctions,” “bypassing sanctions,” “lifting sanctions,” “opening up interactions,” “increasing foreign investment” and “the changing global order” were among the keywords used by the presidential candidates. Given the changing global order, the polarization of American society, and the economic challenges in Iran, Salehian and Hosseini Fahraji suggested in the first place, from the national interests point of view, the principles of foreign policy should not be focal in election debates, as obviously, the audience of the debates and discussions are not only the Iranians, and as in past experiences, the remarks of the presidential candidates affect the cognition of the decision-makers of foreign countries. Regarding the sanctions, the next Iranian president should consider “less for less” in his negotiation with the US since no comprehensive deal seems to be attainable. Finally, he should not miss any chance to enhance the cooperation between Iran and non-Western and neighboring countries, including through SCO and BRICS.
