GPTT hosted an international conference online on the role of regional players in the Gaza war on June 13, attending Abbas Al-Anbouri, the chairman of Iraq’s Rewaq Baghdad Center for Public Policy, and Hassan Ahmadian, assistant professor at University of Tehran. According to Al-Anbouri, after October 7, attention to the Palestinian cause changed in general, and now the Iraqis are trying to redefine themselves in this issue. However, although there is significant potential support for Palestine at different levels, unfortunately, in Iraq there is no clear governmental policy for media exposure to Zionism. He maintained that representing the Gaza crisis as the one between Iran and Israel is the “biggest mistake” when it is actually the confrontation of the entire region with Israel, especially since there is no longer an “axis of resistance,” but a “pole of resistance.” Meanwhile, Americans have tried their best to reduce the level of tension which has been an important factor in not escalating this crisis into a regional war. Also, Ahmadian observed that after October 7, normalization with Israel in the region has become an “illegitimate” agenda. In addition, the “two-state solution” is now pointed out to protect Israel, rather than to defend Palestine. The significant decline of “American legitimacy” can also be identified in the region, while the idea of resistance and its activists have gained more legitimacy. He stated that the future of Gaza is very uncertain. Hamas will be there, but it is not clear to which actor Israel wishes to give the rule of Gaza. The Israelis are in a deadlock and the Americans have no solution other than to end the war.
