Connecting governance with technology, culture, and diplomacy: The Roosta-Azad Award

The first meeting of the Scientific Committee of the Roosta-azad Technology and Governance Award was held on June 16 at the office of the Iranian Vice-presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-based Economy to review the criteria for evaluating and selecting works, to issue the call for proposals and to schedule the first year of the award. Rouhollah Dehghani Firouzabadi, Vice-president for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy stated that the late Dr. Reza Roostazad had many excellent characteristics that can be followed. Dr. Mostafa Zamanian, the head of the Presidential Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) emphasized that the country’s governance system needs the management practices of the late Dr. Roosta-azad since those are exemplars in the field. Dr. Seyed Emamian, GPTT co-founder while announcing that the first award ceremony will be held on October 10, mentioned that four general areas of “technology,” “intellectual diplomacy,” “policy research” and “soft technology” are considered for granting the award. According to him, the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic showed that technology can be very effective in governance, so special attention has been paid to the issue of technology in this award. Also, due to the relative disconnection and isolation of the Iranian academic community, there is limited contact with the official international environment, and therefore a “heavy atmosphere” shadowed the intellectual society. Given the existing conditions, “intellectual diplomacy” can be very helpful in governance.
