Reza Ahmadi Fesharaki, the director of the GPTT Digital Governance Department examined the discussions of Iranian presidential candidates in a note published in Farhikhtegan newspaper on June 24. He stressed that almost none of the candidates, except in a few limited cases, gave a precise answer based on a specific program for governing Iran’s cyberspace, although all the candidates have reached a relatively adequate understanding of the challenges of this field. According to him, it is necessary to review restrictive policies, but the main problem started from the fact that the election candidates often reduced the governance of cyberspace in “filtering,” whether they were for or against it. However, the response of election candidates to the success rate of filtering and regulation of cyberspace should not be based on general views but should be based on specific ideas such as digital governance, internationalism, multilateralism, digital space without borders, and so on. In addition, the governance of cyberspace should address various issues, but the lack of balance between development and regulation has caused policymakers to ignore the most important issues in this field such as AI, the digital economy, cryptocurrencies, etc. The next administration will be successful if it can comprehensively assess the critical needs, including the development of the national information network, revision of restrictive policies, develop the ecosystem of emerging technologies such as AI, facilitate the operation of internal platforms, etc., and take steps to solve these challenges with comprehensive planning.
