Moscow, Russia – Dr. Ali Salehian, an international relations expert from the Sharif Governance and Policy Think Tank (GPTT), delivered an analysis of the shifting global landscape at a BRICS seminar held in Moscow on September 25th.
Dr. Salehian argued that traditional models of development are no longer sufficient to address the complex challenges facing emerging nations in a rapidly changing world. “Finding and following a path of development is a critical endeavor for every nation,” Dr. Salehian stated. “However, in today’s interconnected world, we must recognize that these models must evolve and be adapted to the unique circumstances of each country.”
Dr. Salehian identified several key trends shaping the international system, emphasizing the need for a new approach to development and global governance. Dr. Salehian stated that Western dominance is declining, giving rise to non-Western powers, including BRICS nations, who are increasingly asserting their influence in global affairs.
In Salehian’s view, various aspects of society, culture, economy, and technology are being used as tools for conflict and manipulation in this increasingly interconnected world, often in unconventional ways. Dr. Salehian cited the use of sanctions as a means of political pressure as an example of this trend.
In his view, issues such as pandemics, climate change, misinformation, and terrorism transcend borders, while the traditional institutions of multilateral cooperation are facing increasing strain and criticism for their inability to effectively address global challenges. Dr. Salehian advocated for a more justice-oriented and right-based approach to global governance, emphasizing the importance of equitable solutions and collaborative efforts to address these shared threats.
Dr. Salehian’s presentation highlighted the need for BRICS nations to proactively adapt to these changing dynamics and engage in a more collaborative and equitable approach to global governance. He stressed the importance of finding common ground among BRICS members to address shared challenges and shape a more just and sustainable future for all.
