“The current Iranian electoral funding system is a mess”

Due to the approach of the upcoming parliamentary election in Iran in March 2024, Mohammad Hossein A’lami, GPTT’s researcher discussed the electoral funding system in a note published on a national news website on October 22. He closely scrutinized the relevant laws on the matter and found considerable flaws in them. “Several unenforceable restrictions imposed on candidates,” the lack of transparency of data registered in the financial software system of elections, and failure to use the supervisory capacity of the people, the media, and the stakeholders of the law were some of the most important flaws. He suggested that improving and implementing the relevant laws requires considering two points: the transparency of financial transaction information of candidates, at least generally, and having an encouraging side such as providing a part of the candidates’ expenses or even indirectly providing facilities such as public media.
